State associations and workforce programs are playing an innovative and crucial role in addressing the home health nursing shortage. These organizations are leveraging new strategies and partnerships to support recruitment and retention efforts in the healthcare industry, particularly in the home-based care sector.

Workforce Development Boards across the country have received significant funding from the American Rescue Plan to identify and support individuals interested in healthcare careers. These boards are doing things like:

- Paying for education and training programs
- Facilitating seamless transitions into the workforce
- Creating regional sector partnerships focused on healthcare

In Connecticut, three out of five Workforce Development Boards have established regional sector partnerships for healthcare. These partnerships are innovative platforms that:

- Bring together employers, educators, and workforce development professionals
- Identify specific healthcare workforce needs in the region
- Develop targeted strategies to address those needs

State associations are encouraging and facilitating academic-practice partnerships between home health agencies and educational institutions. These partnerships are:

- Providing students with exposure to home-based care settings
- Offering opportunities for shadowing and competency development
- Creating a pipeline of potential employees familiar with home health work environments

 

These changes create opportunities for home health agencies to offer valuable clinical experiences to nursing students, potentially attracting them to the sector post-graduation.

By fostering these innovative approaches, state associations and workforce programs are playing a vital role in addressing the home health nursing shortage, creating sustainable solutions for workforce development in this critical healthcare sector.
